Save money on auto insurance by driving safer in 2010
Filing auto insurance claims leads to higher premium costs, and the best way to pay less on insurance may be to drive safely
The potential costs of unsafe driving were highlighted by a recent judgment in Palo Alto, California.
In 2007, a city employee rear-ended a man who was stopped at a red light. The city worker had been fumbling for his cell phone and was distracted; the accident victim suffered spinal cord injuries that left him in pain and unable to work.
The city of Palo Alto paid $1.45 million to settle the lawsuit he brought, the Palo Alto Online News reported recently.
The costs of driving aren’t just financial, though. An average of 41,000 people die in on-road accidents each year, making driving the deadliest activity for Americans aged 1 to 34. AAA chief executive officer Peter Kissinger has called traffic deaths a “public health crisis,” suggesting that people are indifferent to the thousands of deaths on the nation’s roads each year.
Driving less is one way to avoid accidents and stay safe, but it’s not the most practical solution. Drivers should follow the speed limit, experts say, and always wear their seatbelts. Tailgating is a bad idea; signaling one’s intentions to other drivers is a good one.
Drivers can avoid expensive auto insurance claims and stay alive by being smart behind the wheel.
