Didier Drogba, a striker on the British Premier League team Chelsea, has a license from his native Cote d’Ivoire and auto insurance in his adopted France. But when he was pulled over in his $500,000 Mercedes in Surrey, England, he was cited for not having a British license or British car insurance.
His license will be suspended for up to a month, and he will face both fines and points that will raise the cost of his insurance.
“Driving without insurance is a serious offense” in Britain, suggested Steve Chelton, a manager at a major British insurance company. Even though auto insurance is not mandated in every U.S. state, those motorists who forego it risk paying thousands in repair or medical costs.
And some states require only a minimum level of auto insurance coverage, but this bare-bones coverage may be inadequate for many drivers. Policyholders should closely inspect the terms of their current policy and consider upgrading for increased peace of mind. Even if they won’t face license suspension like Drogba did, driving with inadequate auto insurance can be an expensive mistake.
