Road disrepair adds to driver expenses
New car buying gets more expensive after drivers take to the road
Buying or leasing a new car is an exciting time when drivers get to pick the aesthetics of their new automobile, decide on most needed features and select a car big enough or small enough to transport their friends and family.
When selecting a car insurance provider the driver will give details to insurance providers about how much they will use the auto, where it will be garaged and how new it is.
But during the car buying and car insurance process, motorists rarely think about the state of the nation’s roads. However, a new study suggests that maybe they should, since it will likely add to the expense of maintaining a vehicle.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and TRIP released a report today highlighting the severe state of disrepair of the nation’s roads saying that drivers in urban areas – where the roads are in the worst shape – pay $750 more annually for increased fuel consumption, maintenance and tire wear.
“The American people are paying for rough roads multiple times,” said Kirk T. Steudle, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation. “Rough roads lead to diminished safety, higher vehicle operating costs and more expensive road repairs.”
