A major auto insurance company is reporting that the number of vehicles involved in collisions with deer has risen substantially in many states.

According to the report, there were 2.4 million collisions nationwide between vehicles and deer between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2009 – an average rate of about 100,000 per month. This was said to be an 18.3 percent increase over the previous statistics from five years earlier.
New Jersey and Nebraska were said to have seen the largest increases in collisions with deer, at 54 percent, followed by Kansas which marked a 41 percent increase.
West Virginia drivers were reportedly most likely in the nation to be involved in a collision with a deer, followed by Michigan, Pennsylvania and Iowa.
To avoid colliding with deer and other wildlife, drivers are advised to remain focused on the road, especially while driving in the night. In far northern states like Maine and New Hampshire, moose collisions are also common, causing far more serious damage and injuries.
