National Flood Safety Awareness Week warns homeowners of flood risks
Homeowners should purchase policy for damage not covered by home insurance.
Florida Emergency Management officials are educating residents about flood risks as part of National Flood Safety Awareness Week.
The campaign follows several days of rainy weather as well as a wet winter season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association is teaming up with the National Flood Insurance Program to teach homeowners about ways to protect themselves and their property from water damage.
“Recent severe weather events causing extensive river flooding and areal flooding across the state serve to highlight the fact that the Sunshine State is prone to flooding at any time of the year, in any part of the state,” said David Halstead, interim director of the Florida division of emergency management.
Areal floods are the most common type of flood and usually result from prolonged rain. Flash floods and river flooding are also threats for Florida residents.
Homeowners should listen for flood warnings on NOAA All Hazards Weather radio and avoid areas prone to flooding, according to the report. They should also be more careful at night when dangers are more difficult to spot and never attempt driving in a flood. Purchasing coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program can help homeowners file claims after an incident.
