How accident-tracking software may lead to lower auto insurance premiums
A program developed by Rutgers University may reduce both accidents and auto insurance claims
A software program designed by Rutgers University researchers can make New Jersey roads safer and reduce consumers’ auto insurance claims, PhysOrg.com reports.
The program, Plan 4 Safety, was recognized earlier this month by the Federal Highway Administration for innovation in promoting road safety. The software gives traffic safety professionals access to over 300,000 crash reports in the Garden State, allowing users to search by road, time of day, driver age or a host of other factors.
In total, 144 data points are organized in the program’s database. Carissa Sestito, Transportation Safety Resource Center outreach coordinator at Rutgers, noted that it makes safety analysis easier and saves both “manpower and time.”
More than 400 groups in the state use Plan 4 Safety, Sestito adds. The state police use it to study crash data in work zones; the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority looks at rural crash rates to determine if roads can be made safer. And the Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources in Hackensack analyzes crashes in Bergen County involving young drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
