Insurance group advises Thanksgiving drivers to educate themselves about auto insurance
Auto insurance is top-of-mind with 33 million drivers on the road for the holiday
Millions of people will be on the road for Thanksgiving, the Insurance Information Institute says, and drivers should closely examine their auto insurance options.
If drivers are traveling for Thanksgiving and renting a car at their destination, they should know what levels of insurance coverage are available. The first step any traveler should take, suggests the III, is to call both his insurance company and his credit card issuer.
But if a renter doesn’t have coverage available, he should know what awaits him at the rental counter. There are four types of coverage listed by the institute. The first is a loss damage waiver, which waives a renter’s responsibility if a car is stolen or damaged. The second, liability protection, covers renters in the event of a lawsuit following an accident. Next is personal accident insurance, which pays medical bills incurred in an accident. Finally, personal effects coverage will insure against the theft of any items in a rental.
By knowing the auto insurance options available, drivers can travel safer this Thanksgiving.
