According to the company, Americans who plan to drive in Mexico are required to carry an additional policy that is effective within that country’s borders. Consumers are also advised to contact the nearest consular office and to report the incident to local law enforcement if they are involved in a car accident in Mexico.
For Canada, some companies offer insurance identification cars that will be useful while driving in the country. American auto insurance policies are also generally applicable in Canada, unlike Mexico.
Other tips offered to those heading to Canada or Mexico for a road trip are to leave copies of the itinerary with family or friends, to bring a passport and other identification and to be familiar with local laws.
For many families, road trips to Mexico and Canada may be a popular option this summer because gas prices have fallen from last year’s peaks and many people are continuing to scale back plans to vacation in more expensive destinations.
