More women are driving under the influence, risking their lives and higher insurance rates

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the amount of arrests for women driving under the influence DUI) had increased by 28.8 percent over the 10-year-period from 1998 to 2007
Over that same time period, DUI arrests for men decreased by 7.5 percent.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA) found similar data that found an increase in the number of intoxicated female drivers who were involved in fatal crashes had increased in 10 states in 2008 when compared to statistics from 2007. The findings came despite a nine percent decline in drunk driving accidents that had occurred during that same time period.
“Impaired driving is an issue that cuts across all segments of society and, sadly, the number of arrests of women driving under the influence is on the rise,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This is clearly a very disturbing trend.”
In addition to the fatal consequences that can occur when driving while drunk, those with drinking violations on their record often end up seeing significant rises in their insurance payments as well.
According to a leading Cleveland-based auto insurance company, motorists with a Driving While Intoxicated DWI) violation on their record stand to pay anywhere from $435 to $643 for car insurance on a yearly basis.
