Auto insurance exchange offers New Year’s driving tips
New Jersey nonprofit suggests that drivers plan ahead on December 31 to lower their risk of getting in an accident and filing an auto insurance claim
New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, but drivers should take precautions to protect themselves from drunk drivers and expensive auto insurance claims.
CURE, a New Jersey auto insurance exchange, cited a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism survey in saying that the risk of getting in a fatal alcohol-related accident is four times higher on New Year’s Eve than any other midweek evening.
Drivers want to ensure that they don’t drive drunk, of course. CURE suggests that partiers designate a driver before heading out, adding that party hosts should make sure that guests leave with a sober driver.
Even sober motorists are at risk on New Year’s Eve, though. Many people do drive drunk, and sober drivers should be extra-cautious in case they cross paths with someone under the influence.
“While alcohol-impaired driving is always a major concern in motor vehicle crashes, there are certain times of the year when the problem is more prevalent, such as holidays,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a December 2008 report.
For that reason, it pays to drive carefully on New Year’s Eve to avoid accidents and auto insurance claims.
