Majority of consumers shop online for insurance quotes
Popularity of web for auto insurance shopping, buying on the rise
A number of news reports say that consumers are increasingly spending time online shopping, researching big purchases and looking for coupons.
Now, a new report from comScore suggests that when investigating insurance quotes, more and more consumers are surfing the web to find the best deal.
According to comScore’s 2009 Auto Insurance report, 63 percent of respondents say they went online to get an auto insurance quote while just 18 percent called for an estimate. Roughly a quarter of those responding visited a local agent working for one company and about the same percentage visited an agent representing multiple insurance companies.
“As with many important purchases, the online channel is often the first place consumers go to research auto insurance prices,” said Kevin Levitt, comScore vice president.
“Whether or not the consumer eventually completes the purchase online, marketers must understand that it is critical to communicate with prospective buyers at this phase of the purchase funnel,” Levitt added.
The comScore report did indicate that a growing number of people searching for auto insurance – 30 percent – are now also making the purchase online.
