Partnership forms to take action against dangerous driving
Members aim to raise awareness in communities they already serve.
Data from the U.S. Department of Transportation showed that traffic fatalities reached a record low last year.
But there is still work to be done, according to some safety advocates. A new Partnership for Advancing Road Safety has formed to promote various initiatives that decrease dangerous driving and may help prevent fatalities. Members of the partnership, including American Traffic Solutions, Traffipax, LaserCraft and more, will help raise awareness in communities they already serve.
“Our mission is to create safer roadways in our communities using education efforts and law enforcement strategies that increase intersection safety, and reduce excessive speeds and distracted driving,” said PARS Executive Director David Kelly.
Safety cameras are one way to stop driving from running red lights, according to the release. Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed that 762 people were killed in 2008 in accidents involving red-light running. PARS is also taking action against speeding, which causes one-third of traffic fatalities, according to the IIHS.
The partnership is open to all safety advocates and citizens. Making roads safer for drivers can also reduce auto insurance premiums and protect pedestrians from automobile-related accidents, according to the report.
