Technology could improve teen driving

Teen drivers eager to get behind the wheel also tend to be some of the riskiest drivers to insure. Given their lack of experience on the road and penchant for sometimes more hazardous behavior, they also tend to incur high car insurance rates.

But a new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that an in-vehicle monitoring device for teen drivers can help keep them safer.

The device, which would monitor and flag speeding, aggressive driving and use of seat belts could help reduce teen drivers’ risk and help the parents of new drivers rest a bit easier when their child takes the car.

Some states are taking a less technology-oriented approach to keeping teen drivers and other road occupants safer.

Last month, New Jersey became the first state to require cars to show a decal on a vehicle operated by a teen with a permit or provisional license. The legislation responsible for the new mandate is NJ’s first step toward preventing auto accidents in the densely populate state.
