Winter driving leads to accidents, auto insurance claims
Accidents and higher auto insurance rates can result from careless driving in wintry conditions
Accidents caused by the snow that effectively shut down most of the East Coast this weekend amply illustrate the danger of getting behind the wheel during winter.
At least five on-road deaths occurred over the weekend due to weather conditions, the Associated Press reported Monday. And the workweek was slow to begin for many: roads were still unsafe and public transit systems had yet to resume full service.
Joy Ricasa, a Washington, D.C.-area bookkeeper, was quoted by the news service on her way to work on Monday. “I was very careful. I don’t want to have an accident,” she said.
Also on Monday, the American Automobile Association released its projections for holiday travel figures. Close to 88 million people will travel more than 50 miles during the holidays, AAA said, marking a 3.8 percent increase from last year’s holiday season.
Of those, 88 percent are expected to drive to their destinations. Travelers will journey 791 miles roundtrip on average, AAA adds.
Deaths – and countless accidents – were caused by recent winter weather. With a higher number of on-road travelers in the next two weeks, drivers should be extra-cautious so as not to get in accidents and file auto insurance claims.
