The return of the El Nino weather pattern in the Pacific will have implications for consumers across America when it comes to their home insurance policies.
A recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates that the El Nino conditions are expected to remain in place through the winter and possibly for as long as 12 months.
The federal agency explains that El Nino is caused by an increase in water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, and that one by-product of the phenomenon can be storms in many parts of the country that can result in things like flooding and mudslides in this country and elsewhere.
“Advanced climate science allows us to alert industries, governments and emergency managers about the weather conditions El Nino may bring so these can be factored into decision-making and ultimately protect life, property and the economy.” said NOAA administrator Jane Lubchenco.
One bright spot for homeowners is the tendency of an El Nino trend to produce a milder Atlantic hurricane system, which will also come as good news to insurance companies that have been hit hard in recent years by several major storms.
