Home insurance company ranks safest cities and towns in America
A major home insurer released its annual ranking of the nation’s safest places to live
Austin, Texas is the safest large city in the country, a study commissioned by a major home insurance company reveals.
The study was performed by Sperling’s Best Places, a website that compiles community-scale data from around the country. Sperling’s considered crime statistics, natural disaster risk, housing depreciation, environmental hazards, life expectancy and employment levels, among other factors, in the 379 municipalities it examined.
Communities were classified as large, mid-size or small. Large cities were those with over 500,000 people; mid-size cities had between 150,000 and 500,000 residents; and small towns were home to fewer than 150,000.
Among large cities, Austin-Round Rock, Texas came in first. It’s the home of Dell, Whole Foods and the University of Texas, Sperling’s says; it’s the state capital, too. The safest mid-size city is Fargo, North Dakota-Moorhead, Minnesota, due to residents’ low rate of unemployment and long life expectancy. And the safest small town is Lewiston, Idaho-Clarkston, Washington. It has low crime and is “regarded as the most inland seaport in the Western U.S.”
Home insurance rates are closely tied to the kind of data that Sperling’s compiled. Homes in safer communities will have less-expensive home insurance, not to mention a higher quality of life for residents.
